Pink Fairies (Caladenia latifolia)

Flowers in Spring (Aug - Nov), favours stable coastal dunes beneath the coast tea-tree.

Has a labellum with long fringes and the central calli in a semi-circle.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 6.5 inches (16cm).

Pollination of the Caladenia species has been studied very little but it is thought that smaller ones are pollinated by bees.


Bronze Bird Orchid (Chiloglottis X pescottiana)

Flowers in Spring (Sep - Nov), favours sheltered sites growing with the C trapeziformis and C valida (parent species of this hybrid).

Like other Chiloglottis, this orchid has two ground hugging leaves.  The labellum is distinctive because it is rounded and has prominent stalked calli.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 2.5 inches (6.5cm).

Pollination is by pseudo-copulation, agents being male wasps.  Each species has its own unique pollinator species.
