Trim Sun Orchid (Thelymitra peniculata)

Flowers in Spring (Sep - Nov), favours open forest and woodland with well drained soil.

Flowers blue to purplish, column arms turned upwards and hair tufts are white. The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 9 inches (23cm).  Readily self pollinates because it opens only on hot days.

Believed to be pollinated by bees but if not, then the flowers will self pollinate.  Almost all species have flowers that open only on sunny days - hence the name of 'sun' orchid.


Nagambie Leek Orchid (Prasophyllum hygrophilum)

Flowers in Spring/Summer (Nov - Dec) - favours wet habitat in River Red Gum woodland with heavy clay soils.

Highly localised and colour varies from green to reddish/brown.  The plant has a strong scent and are moderately large.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 18 inches (46cm).

Bees and wasps are reported to be main pollinators of this genus although syrphiid flies are also frequent visitors.
