HELMET ORCHIDS & MIMICRY

Helmet Orchids (Anzybas, Corybas & Corysanthes) are pollinated by fungus flies and, to this end, may mimic fungal growth.

Flowers of some species have a fungal type odour.

The orchids grow in damp areas and flower during the winter months when there is an abundance of fruiting fungus.  Because reproduction is also vegetative, these very small plants can be found in large colonies amongst the decaying leaf litter .

They can even have the appearance of small toadstools.  (see photos below)
