Orchid structure began with a sun orchid like ancestor and evolved a new design relevant to the pollinator.

The majority of Thelymitra (sun orchid) have this type of flower structure. In the case of this 'high country' Thelymitra, the third petal has started a redesign to accommodate a specific pollinator.  One could speculate that since the life-span of both the orchid and the insect is short, due to the limited spring and summer periods of mountainous regions, the orchid needed to attract something specific to distribute its pollen.
