Midget Greenhood (Hymenochilus muticus - formerly Pterostylis mutica)

Flowers in Spring/Summer (Aug - Dec), favours grassy woodland in well drained soil.  Prefers dryer habitat but will extend to coastal and alpine areas.

Easily overlooked species because of size and growing environment.  Multi-flowered with the small green labellum having a dark green erect appendage.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 5 inches (13cm).

All known pollinators of the Genus Hymenochilus have been male insects of the fungus gnat and mosquito family.

Highland Sun Orchid (Thelymitra sp. aff. megcalyptra)

Flowers in Spring/Summer (Nov - Jan), favours moist woodland and alpine grassland.

This orchid differs from the T megcalyptra because of its later flowering and higher altitude growing habitat.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 12 inches (30cm).

Believed to be pollinated by bees but if not, then the flowers will self pollinate.  Almost all species have flowers that open only on sunny days - hence the name of 'sun' orchid.
