Tallageira Spider Orchid (Arachnorchis sp. aff. venusta - formerly Caladenia sp. aff. venusta)

Flowers in Spring (Sept - Oct) - heathy woodland in an area growing with A. formosa.

Also found in South Australia where plant has small calli and marginal teeth.  Uncertain identity and requires further study to ascertain status.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 12 inches (31cm).

Pollination of the Arachnorchis species has been studied very little but it is thought that spider orchids are generally pollinated by pseudocopulation (male thynnid wasp).

Bristly Rustyhood (Oligochaetochilus setifer - formerly Pterostylis setifera)

Flowers in Spring (Sep - Nov), favours drier forests amongst mallee and adjacent ironbark.

The labellum is thrust forward and has numerous bristles.  The leaves dry up and have almost disappeared by the time of flowering.  The photo ruler indicates the height of this particular plant - a total of 7.5 inches (19cm).

All known pollinators of the Genus Oligochaetochilus have been male insects of the fungus gnat and mosquito family.
